I am a therapist and coach, a Marvel fan, an animal lover, and most importantly, the mom to a wonderful 20-year old teen diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. My child was diagnosed with ADHD at the tender age of 7-years old. Their 2nd grade teacher noticed little to no school work was being completed in class, with my child usually drawing pictures or “spacing out”. After assessments were completed, it was confirmed…ADHD.
It took me awhile to realize that the diagnosis was just the beginning of our neurodiversity journey.
As a therapist, it was tough to admit that at the time of diagnosis, I had limited knowledge about ADHD. Wow, I had a lot to learn. I began to dive into the world of ADHD and all of the information I could absorb, from genetics and symptom variations to treatments and educational supports.
Some things that we tried helped and other things didn't. We found some stability in the younger, and then it all seemed to change when adolescence arrived.
Hormones, growth spurts, and my child's own push for independence changed everything. What was working, was not working anymore. School struggles and mood swings intensified. Nearly everything asked of them was met with a "NOT NOW" reply. Social media became an addiction and their reversed sleep schedule seemed to be making matters worse. The frustrations, tension, and stress in the family made home life miserable. Different medications, trials without medication, and creativity with behavioral techniques and discipline became an ongoing pursuit.
I felt very alone in my efforts and with my worries. Knowledge and support has been a lifesaver for me and can be for you. My child graduated from high school and is planning out her higher education and career in animation and the entertainment industry. We have been able to strengthen communication, building a strong relationship, talking through concerns and struggles, and problem solving together.
The knowledge I have now and the support I can provide is what I want to pass on to other teenagers and parents. It can help you during times of high stress and frustrations, as well as get you though those dark periods of uncertainty and anxiety.
My 3-year old, female Golden Retriever, Dolce, is a certified Therapy Dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and is available to be a part of therapy sessions, if appropriate and desired.
